Helping People
For 13 years the Zen’s Tea Company has been helping people through the power of tea but recently there has been a notable shift in language and reason that calls into question what is “helping people”?
When I started the Zen’s Tea company in 2012 few people asked questions: what is obesity, what is sickness, what is a healthy child, what is a healthy female or male.
Many had an elementary understanding of what is healthy and knew enough about health and disease to prompt them to ask what tea can be used to reach their health goals. Now that we are in 2025 there is a new generation of people who lack critical thinking skills and the most basic knowledge of what health is. As a result it is becoming increasingly more difficult to help the newest generation of people.
This blog is an attempt to live up to the Zen’s Tea Mission and Motto of helping people through the power of tea.
I see a dangerous deconstruction of language, interpretation, and rationality and its having a profound effect on people’s health. There has been a recent ‘cultural shift of thinking’ that lifts emotional driven opinions above logic and reason, most notably what is healthy?
Talk to any Family Medicine Doctor who has been practicing medicine for 20 years and they will share with you how difficult it is to convince an emotionally driven person, whose self-perception rejects any discomfort, to adopt an unwelcome lifestyle change. If a patient does not want to stop smoking or lose weight because it will be uncomfortable then chances are it will be difficult for the patient to maintain any reasonable health improvements; at least without pharmaceutical based medicine.
Thomas Edision said “The Doctor of the future will give no medicine but will instruct his patient in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.” To ‘instruct’ is the act of educating patients about their health. At the time Doctors were the primary source of health information and Edison understood that healthcare professionals have an obligation to empower people to manage their health, and this was done primarily through education.
Doctors have special power that enables them to empower people by providing clear, understandable information about their patients’ health. My guess is that eight years of medical school equips a person to be able to teach, at the very least, how to explain the importance of proper weight management and how tea can assist.
The knowledge a Doctor offers enables patients to actively participate in decision-making and take ownership of their health. What I believe is most beautiful is how patients who are involved in developing their own care plans (implementing tea or not) are provided with the tools and resources to manage their health. This fosters a sense of autonomy, empowering the ordinary person to take ownership of their healthcare and to be confident in their ability to make informed choices. Since 2012, this is what the Zen’s Tea Company has sought to achieve: to educate, empower, and provide emotional support to encourage people to live healthier lives.
So why don’t people trust the licensed medical Doctors? Arguably the educated, Board Certified, Medical Physicians are more qualified to speak on health, disease, and prevention than the Zen’s Tea House Staff. Why do people choose to go to Zen’s Tea House? Is it because of the pharmaceutical payouts offered to Licensed Medical Doctors or is it because people want something more natural?
Whatever the reason, the Zen’s Tea Company seeks to help people reach their health goals and this is done by educating and empowering people about diet, the cause and prevention of disease, and of course the health benefits of tea.
But language, interpretation, and rationality are up for debate!
- What is true and healthy for you is not true and healthy for me.
- I interpret 50lbs of extra weight on my child as healthy.
- Sometimes I identify as vaccinated and to me that makes sense.
The implications and lack of definitive, consistent use of language and reasoning is alarming. As the Founder of the Zen’s Tea House company I have an obligation to defend the mission and motto of the company. The change in culture, specifically the evolution of language, interpretation, and rationality forces me to ask, is the Zen’s Tea company actually helping people through the power of tea?
Sure we can say we identify as helping people but the statement implies an existential component- people. In order for the statement of helping people through the power of tea to be true, then by definition, there must be people who are being helped by the Zen’s Tea Company. And this statement cannot be altered by language, interpretation, and rationality.
